WHO

Mimi & Lu (originally Moushart Jewelry) was born amoung colorful clowns and crazy acrobats. While Michelle Watson (owner/designer) was working a summer position in the wardrobe department of Cirque du Soleil, several cirque members noticed her jewelry and purchased several of her pieces. This was the initial spark that eventually ignited Mimi & Lu.

Growing up, Michelle always had creative energy stirring, and while other kids were out playing, she was planted in a corner of her room running fabrics through a starter sewing machine. Always fascinated with putting color an texture into creative use, Michelle studied Art at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and graduated with a degree in Art Studio. Her creativity landed her backstage at a Boston Theater working with props and costumes for three years. In Boston, Michelle began to explore beading and jewelry making.  After her summer with Cirque Du Soleil she returned to California and created Moushart, which today is Mimi & Lu.

Mimi & Lu is currently based in San Diego, California and sells to stores across the country and internationally.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My designs come from a fine art standpoint, reflecting my education starting with sculpture all the way to paper making. I think that experience has given me the chance to play with balance, scale and color.  The resulting designs are innovative, diverse and always translate a facet of myself in them.  Having a hint of my personality in each design creates a constant in an ever evolving jewelry line. While the materials may cause the initial spark, my designs become less about the actual materials and more about how they transform into the final piece.  I can get so immersed in the process that I begin to feel somewhat like a mad scientist, hunched over my table, twisting wires, beads flying until the design clicks and I come up to breathe.  In the end, perhaps the rules of jewelry design and fashion may not always apply, but that of art does. - michelle watson.
